Important
Hearing: Let Your Voice Be Heard To Protect Jekyll Island
The Senate Natural Resources and the Environment Committee will hold an
important hearing on Tuesday, April 10, at 9:00 a.m. in room 450 of the
state Capitol to discuss House Bill 214. HB 214 proposes to extend the
life of the Jekyll Island Authority from 2049 until 2099 and its power to
lease the lands of the island until that date as well as create a new
legislative oversight committee to monitor the Authority. As currently
constructed, the bill does not provide meaningful protection for the south
end of the island. This meeting will include a presentation and update by
the Jekyll Island Authority and will invite public comment on HB 214.
Anyone wishing to comment should plan to register to speak in room 450
immediately before the hearing. For more information on HB 214, please

Learn Ways to Reduce Junk Mail and Its Impact on the Environment
Junk mail can be a nuisance, but it also is a serious hazard to the
environment. According to the Center for a New American Dream, 5.6 million
tons of catalogs and other direct mail advertisements end up in U.S.
landfills annually. In addition, the amount of unsolicited junk mail the
average American household receives equals to 1.5 trees every year—more than
100 million trees for all U.S. households combined; approximately 44 percent
of junk mail is thrown away unopened, but only 22 percent is recycled; and
Americans pay $370 million annually to dispose of junk mail that is not
recycled. If you would like to stop or reduce your junk mail, please visit
