Late
on March 30, the final session of the Georgia General Assembly, after a
series of votes against proposed amendments, and after an overwhelming vote
NOT to table the bill, the House voted the Stream Buffer Destruction Act
DOWN by a vote of 139-30. This is a huge victory for the environmental community
and the Georgia Water Coalition - we did not anticipate such overwhelming
opposition to this bill. We even got votes from Representatives who don't
normally support environmental legislation!
Pro-environment Representatives deserve a huge amount of credit - Debbie
Buckner (Columbus), Brian Thomas (Gwinnett), Bob Holmes (Fulton), and Dubose
Porter (Dublin) all spoke eloquently for about 20 minutes each, carefully
crafting the argument for why this bill was such a bad idea. And the legislative
leaders for the environmental community - the Sierra Club, Upper Chattahoochee
Riverkeeper, Georgia Conservation Voters, and Georgia Public Interest Research
Group (PIRG) also deserve a lot of credit for their hard work and leadership.
The Georgia Conservancy was also involved every step of the way, and we
are extremely proud that for now, the quality of our drinking water will
not be harmed by development within stream buffers.
